Can a Christian have a demon?

Posted on 24 August, 2011 at 11:57
In Mark 9:25 Jesus said, "Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him and enter no more into him (KJV). In Luke 4:31-37 Jesus cast out a demon in a man. Jesus said in verse thirty-five, " Hold thy peace and come out of him (KJV). Jesus cast out, not cast off demon from his people. He gave his disciples and us the same mandate, "And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; (Mark 16:17)."
We know through scripture verses that people can have a demon, but can a Christian have a demon? In order for me to answer that question let us look at what the scriptures says about sins.
When we are born again we become a new creature in Christ. Ephesians 4:27 says, we are not to give the devil a foothold. A foothold is anything that gives the devil access or grounds to our lives and in us. These footholds generally have to do with sin. Sins we have committed, sins committed against us, or generational curses due to sin.
Some sins we have committed against ourselves involve, sex outside of marriage, pornography, jealously, hatred, horoscopes (witchcraft), and abortion. Whether these and other sins were committed before we became a Christian or after, we have given the devil a foothold in us. We must renounce the works of the devil by asking for forgiveness and taking back the grounds we have given to the devil. The demon associated with these sins or infirmities must leave once commanded to do so, because they no longer have a right to be there.
Sins done to us are rape, abuse, and rejection. These offenses cause emotional and spiritual trauma. If we choose not to forgive and let go, we give the devil access and footholds to torment us and keep us in captivity. Through forgiveness we break the chains that bind us.
In generational curses we see the same recurring problems from generation to generations, such as health problems, alcoholism, depression, suicide, and/or poverty to name a few. These are strongholds that must be broken and destroyed in our lives through the power of redemption and through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Some diseases and infirmities are a direct result of sin. We see forgiveness is necessary for healing and deliverance. Jesus said to the man with the palsy, "Thy sins be forgiven thee (Matt. 9:2)." In Mark 2:1-5 they brought a man to Jesus lowering him form the rooftop. Jesus once again said to the man, "Son, thy sins be forgiven thee." He called the man son, to imply he was one of his children. Then  the man was healed. Some sins are not as obvious as others such as fear, stress, and anxiety. Behind all sin is a demon.
There are some that might wonder how could good and evil dwell in the same body. Let me ask you question. In the Garden of Eden, where humanity and temptation began; why was there the tree of life and the tree of good and evil? How could they co-exist in the same place, Paradise?
The good news is Jesus has defeated the works of the devil and he has given us the power and authority in His name, to cast our demons and heal the sick.
I asked the question can a Christian have a demon? The answer is yes, a born again, and bible-thumping Christian can have a demon.
As a deliverance minister, from my own experience, there is no question that a Christian can have a demon. A demon must be cast out, not off of a Christian. There are some that would argue that a spirit filled Christian cannot have a demon, and I would have to agree. However, the only person I know that was filled with the Spirit of God without measure is Jesus. The rest of us have room to grow.
